Overweight Dog Help

Guidance on nutrition to support and maintain your dog's overall health and well-being.

As dog owners, every day you make choices for your pet regarding nutrition, exercise and well-being. These choices can affect your dog’s body weight and play an important role in your dog’s overall health. All too often, your dog’s weight gain sneaks up on you. For this reason, it is a good idea to frequently weigh your dog and have your dog’s body weight scored. We encourage owners to make Van Isle Vet a frequent stop for a quick visit, a weigh-in and lots of TLC from the staff!

When is a dog considered to be overweight?

To determine a dog’s ideal body weight, we use a body condition score with 1 being emaciated and 5 being morbidly obese. Your veterinarian will score your dog’s body weight during their annual physical exam. Although every breed is different, dogs are typically considered overweight when their ribs are not easily palpable and they do not have a visible waistline.

Some breeds prone to obesity?

There are some breeds that can be prone to obesity such as Retrievers, Beagles, Pugs and Dachshunds (just to name a few). However, all breeds can be prone to obesity depending on their lifestyle, dietary habits and systemic diseases. Obesity has become a major health epidemic in our pets over the years and is the number one cause of most underlying diseases.

What are some long-term effects of obesity on your pets?

Long term effects of obesity can include joint disease, heart disease, skin disease, diabetes, sore backs/disk disease and many other inflammatory diseases. However, one of the most significant long-term effects obesity can have on your dog is a decreased life expectancy.

Why should you have weight loss & management consultation at clinics?

It is important to have weight management consultations to get the most accurate information required to be successful. Weight loss does not happen overnight and is an ongoing commitment. Having the guidance and support of a professional outside of the home can help you stay on track and help you safely meet your goals.
