Behaviour Consultation

Assisting pet owners in treating the underlying reasons behind their dog's behavioural problems.

Here at Van Isle Veterinary Hospital we often see dogs due to behavioural issues. There are many reasons why dogs exhibit unwanted behaviours which can sometimes be quite dramatic and acute or slowly develop over time. While some behavioural issues can be corrected through the proper diagnosing and treatment of specific medical conditions (such as urinary tract infections or pain associated with arthritis), many unwanted behaviours are not due to a medical condition and require the expertise of a professional dog counsellor or trainer. Your veterinarian will work with you and your dog to rule out any underlying medical conditions that can cause unwanted behaviours and will guide you in finding the right type of dog counselling.

How can dog counsellors help?

Animal behaviour counsellors can help by advising owners whose pets have developed inappropriate behaviours. Behaviour counsellors have an in-depth knowledge of normal animal behaviours, as well as techniques for modifying problem behaviours.

What happens at a behaviour consultation?

Behavior consultations consist of an in-depth discussion about the problem behaviour (s), an assessment of the dog’s behaviour in general, as well as in regards to the specific problem behaviour (s). Your counsellor will provide you with a detailed treatment plan for behaviour modification techniques, including different training strategies tailored to your pets’ specific needs, as well as follow up appointments to help guide the process if needed.

Will my pet insurance policy cover the cost of a behaviour consultation?

There are several different pet insurance policies available to dog owners, each with their own individual packages. It is always best to contact your insurance company of choice to determine if behaviour counselling is covered.

What are the benefits of a behaviour consultation?

Owners will have a better understanding of why their pet is exhibiting certain behaviours and will have the knowledge and tools to manage and treat those behaviours. One of the greatest benefits of all is creating a happier, healthier bond between you and your pet!
